Amazon rewards a specific, documented set of signals more than most sellers act on — the Buy Box algorithm, backend search terms, and the Inventory Performance Index all move orders without a price change. Here are ten levers worth acting on, starting with the ones most sellers never touch.
1. Fill every backend search term field, not just the visible title
Amazon indexes hidden backend keywords the same way it indexes your title and bullet points, but a buyer never sees them — so there is no reason to leave the field half-used. Add genuine synonyms, regional spellings, and common misspellings of your product name (buyers do search "sandle" as often as "sandal"). This is pure upside: it costs nothing, has no character limit pressure on your visible title, and widens the search queries your listing can match without changing how the listing looks.
2. Understand what actually wins the Buy Box before you chase it with price alone
Price is one input to Buy Box eligibility, not the only one — fulfilment method (FBA vs FBM), order defect rate, late shipment rate, and account health all factor in. A seller at a slightly higher price with excellent fulfilment metrics can out-compete a cheaper seller with a shaky account. If you are losing the Buy Box on a listing, check your account health dashboard before cutting margin — the fix might be your late shipment rate, not your price.
3. Protect your Inventory Performance Index if you use FBA
A low IPI score caps your FBA storage volume and can restrict which products you are even allowed to send in, which throttles your ability to generate orders regardless of how good the listing is. The biggest IPI drag for most small sellers is excess, slow-moving inventory sitting in a fulfilment centre. Run liquidation or removal on anything that has not moved in 90 days before it drags down the score that gates everything else.
4. Build A+ Content for your top-selling ASINs, in that order
A+ Content (comparison charts, lifestyle images, brand story blocks) reliably lifts conversion rate, but building it across a large catalog is slow. Sequence it by current order volume — the ASIN already selling 50 units a week returns far more from a conversion-rate lift than one selling two units a week, for the same build effort.
5. Target Sponsored Products at your own long-tail keywords, not the category head term
The broad category keyword is the most expensive and contested bid on the platform. Pull the actual search terms report from a campaign that has run for two weeks and promote the specific phrases that already converted — they are cheaper, more relevant, and tell you what buyers actually typed to find you, rather than what you guessed they would type.
6. Request reviews the way Amazon explicitly allows, not the way most sellers try
Amazon's own "Request a Review" button inside Seller Central sends a neutral, compliant review request at the right post-delivery moment, and using it consistently compounds review count over time without any policy risk. Incentivised reviews, review-for-discount offers and private review groups are all against Amazon's policy and risk the account, not just the listing.
7. Consolidate colour and size variations into one parent ASIN
A parent ASIN pools reviews and Best Seller Rank history across all its child variations, the same way Meesho and Flipkart catalog variants do — a buyer sees one product with 300 combined reviews and several options, not several unproven listings. If you are currently listing colours as separate standalone ASINs, this single structural change is often worth more than a round of keyword optimisation.
8. Fix the listing content behind your worst return reason
Pull your Voice of the Customer dashboard or return reason report and fix the single largest cause first — a sizing problem is fixed with a size chart in the images, not in the bullet points nobody reads at that stage of the decision. Returns feed into your order defect rate, which feeds into Buy Box eligibility, so a content fix here has a second-order effect on orders beyond just the saved return.
9. Enrol eligible, repeat-purchase products in Subscribe & Save
For consumable or repeat-purchase categories, Subscribe & Save converts a one-time buyer into a recurring order without any extra marketing spend on your part — the mechanism does the repeat-selling work. Check eligibility in Seller Central; it is a one-time setup per ASIN, not a recurring task.
10. Watch your account health dashboard weekly, not just when something breaks
Order defect rate, late shipment rate and valid tracking rate all move slowly and quietly erode Buy Box eligibility and search placement well before you get an account health warning. A weekly five-minute check catches a drifting metric while it is a small fix, instead of a suspension-adjacent one.
What does not belong on this list
Incentivised or fake reviews, review-gating, keyword stuffing in visible content, and manipulating MRP to fake a discount are all against Amazon's policies and are the most common cause of account suspensions among small sellers chasing fast growth. None of the ten tactics above carry that risk.
