What an HSN code is
HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) is the product code GST uses to decide which tax rate applies. Marketplaces such as Meesho and Flipkart ask for it on every listing, and the same code appears on your tax invoices and in the HSN summary of your GSTR-1 return.
Codes are 4, 6 or 8 digits. The first two digits are the chapter (61 is knitted apparel, 64 is footwear, 71 is jewellery), and each extra pair narrows the product down.
Why clothing and footwear need a price
For apparel, footwear and made-up textiles, the GST rate depends on the selling price per piece: 5% up to ₹2,500 and 18% above it under the current slabs. Enter your selling price and the finder shows the rate that applies; leave it empty to see both bands.
Work out the GST on a price →When the finder shows a chapter, not a full code
For some products the exact heading depends on details a name alone cannot tell, such as whether a garment is knitted or woven. In that case the finder shows the chapter and you choose the exact code from the HSN dropdown in your marketplace listing form, which lists only valid codes for that category.
